Red Sox Complete Trade For Kotsay

The Red Sox have outfield depth after completing a trade with the Braves for veteran center fielder Mark Kotsay. The Red Sox acquired Kotsay on Wednesday, only one day after placing J.D. Drew on the 15-day DL with a lower back strain.

Twins Add Guardado To Bullpen

The Twins added depth to their bullpen Monday, acquiring lefthander Eddie Guardado from the Rangers for minor league righthander Mark Hamburger, as reported by Yahoo.com. Guardado has appeared in 55 games for the Rangers this season, going 3-3 with a 3.65 ERA.

Pirates Acquire Diaz From Jays

The Pirates today acquired catcher Robinzon Diaz from the Toronto Blue Jays as the player to be named in the August 21 deal that sent infielder Jose Bautista to the Jays. The 24-year-old right-handed hitting backstop has hit .285 (57-for-200) with 11 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI in 57 minor league games this season. He also appeared in one game with Toronto as the designated hitter and went hitless in four at bats at Tampa Bay on April 23. Diaz began the 2008 season with Triple-A Syracuse and has spent a majority of the season with the Chiefs. He was on the disabled list with a right ankle sprain from May 3 through July 16 and hit .386 (17-for-44) while playing 15 games on a rehab assignment with the GCL Blue Jays from June 27 through July 16. Robinzon was reinstated from the D.L. and was assigned to Class-A Dunedin, where he hit .320 (8-for-25) in six games before re-joining Syracuse on July 24. The Dominican Republic native was originally signed by Toronto as a non-drafted free agent on November 19, 2000. He captured the Appalachian League batting title with a .374 average in 2003 and was named to the league's postseason All-Star team as a catcher. A year later, Diaz was selected to the midseason and postseason All-Star teams in the South Atlantic League while batting .287 with 20 doubles and 42 RBI in 105 games with Charleston (WV). He was also selected to participate for the World team at the 2004 MLB All-Star Futures Game. Diaz spent the entire 2005 campaign with Dunedin and was selected to the Florida State League's midseason and postseason All-Star teams. He ranked tenth in the league with a .294 batting average and posted a career-high 65 RBI in 100 games that season. In 2006, Diaz spent his second straight full season with Dunedin and was named to both the mid and postseason All-Star teams for the second consecutive year after hitting .306 with 21 doubles, three home runs and 44 RBI in 104 games. His .306 average ranked fourth in the Florida State League. In 640 career minor league games, Diaz has batted .304, going 740-for-2431 with a 135 doubles, 17 home runs, and 327 RBI. Diaz has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Report: Dodgers Acquire Maddux

The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday night that the team had completed a deal with the Padres for veteran right-hander Greg Maddux. Citing an anonymous person close to the deal, the newspaper did not know who San Diego would receive in return. Maddux has a 3.99 ERA this season but is only 6-9 for a Padres team that has languished in last place in the weak NL West.

Ayala Traded To The Mets

The Nationals traded right-handed relief pitcher Luis Ayala to the Mets on Sunday morning for a player to be named later, but that player is expected to be infielder Anderson Hernandez. Ayala requested the trade weeks ago because he wanted a change of scenery, due to personal problems.

Red Sox Get Byrd From Indians

The Red Sox acquired pitcher Paul Byrd from the Indians on Tuesday, hoping to boost a rotation hurt by an injury to Tim Wakefield and the struggles of Clay Buchholz. The Red Sox will send either a player to be named or cash to the Indians, as reported by the Associated Press. Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA in his 14th season. But since the All-Star break he has won all four of his starts and has a 1.24 ERA.

D-Backs Land Dunn

Arizona claimed Reds left fielder Adam Dunn ? currently tied for the major-league lead in home runs ? on waivers and a deal was consummated just before the 48-hour window expired Monday, according to major-league sources. The Diamondbacks also had interest in Dunn before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. In exchange for Dunn, according to ESPN, Cincinnati will receive minor league pitcher Dallas Buck and two other players to be named later.

Royals Trade Horacio Ramirez To White Sox

The Kansas City Royals have traded left-handed pitcher Horacio Ramirez to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Paulo Orlando. Left-handed pitcher Josh Newman will be recalled from Triple-A Omaha tomorrow and will be in uniform, wearing #63. Orlando will be assigned to the High Class A Wilmington roster. With the moves, the Royals 40-man roster now stands at 39. Orlando, 22, is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound center fielder from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The right-handed hitter and thrower has spent the entire 2008 season with High Class A Winston-Salem in the Carolina League, hitting .264 (118-for-447) with 15 doubles, 12 triples, nine home runs, 42 RBI and 73 runs scored. He has stolen 28 bases in 37 attempts. Since signing with the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 21, 2005, Orlando has stolen 77 bases in a little over two and a half seasons of professional baseball. He entered the 2008 season ranked by Baseball America as the fastest baserunner and best defensive outfielder in the White Sox organization. Ramirez was signed by the Royals as a minor league free agent on May 21. He was 1-1 with a 2.59 ERA in 15 relief appearances.
